Your Neck Pain Might Not Be Coming From Your Neck
I want to share a client story that perfectly illustrates how the body actually works, not just how we think it works.
A client came in recently complaining of neck pain and upper shoulder tension. On the surface, that sounds straightforward. Most people would expect the solution to live somewhere in the neck and shoulders.
But when I assessed his posture, I saw something more telling.
His chin was slightly tucked toward his chest. His shoulders were rolled forward. His head was being pulled down and forward. To me, this immediately pointed to restriction through the front of the body. Especially the chest and deeper fascial lines.
So we began there.
During the session, I worked on his neck, shoulders, and spent time opening up the chest. As I continued, I noticed something else: restriction in his jaw.
Now here’s the important part. He had no jaw pain.
But restriction doesn’t need to be painful to be impactful.
I explained what I was feeling and recommended intraoral massage for his next session.
When he came back a week later, we focused on that.
Immediately after the intraoral work, the changes were undeniable. His chin naturally lifted away from his sternum. He regained full range of motion in his neck. And most importantly, his neck and shoulder pain were gone.
Completely!
This is the power of working with fascia.
Fascia is a connective web that runs through your entire body. When there’s restriction in one area, it creates tension patterns that pull and compensate elsewhere. In this case, tension in the jaw was contributing to pain in the neck and shoulders.
And without addressing the root cause, that pain likely would have kept coming back.
This is why I approach the body the way I do. Not just chasing symptoms, but following the patterns.
Because sometimes the answer isn’t where it hurts. It’s where it’s pulling from.
